About the School
We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative and technically skilled Performing Arts Technician to join our dynamic and thriving creative arts department in Berkshire.
Our school is committed to delivering exceptional drama, music, and dance performances that inspire our students and engage the wider community. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting our department by operating and maintaining lighting, sound, staging, and technical equipment for curricular lessons, rehearsals, and high-profile school productions.
The Role
As Performing Arts Technician, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day technical management of our performance spaces, including the school theatre, drama studios, and music rooms. You will work closely with the Head of Performing Arts, music and drama teachers, and student crew members to ensure all events run safely, professionally, and seamlessly.
Your responsibilities will include:
Setting up, operating, and maintaining lighting, sound, and AV equipment for lessons, assemblies, rehearsals, and live productions.
Carrying out routine checks, testing, and maintenance of all theatrical and technical equipment.
Managing stage setup, set construction, rigging, and safe dismantling following performances.
Ensuring a safe working environment by adhering strictly to health and safety regulations, PAT testing standards, and working-at-height guidelines.
Training and supporting staff and students in the safe and effective use of technical equipment.
Managing inventory levels, ordering technical consumables, and keeping storage areas clean, organised, and secure.
Troubleshooting technical faults quickly and effectively, especially under pressure during live events.
Collaborating with directors, choreographers, and musical directors to bring creative visions to life.
Maintaining accurate compliance, maintenance, and asset records.
Providing flexible technical support for evening or weekend school productions and community events as required.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
Technically proficient with a solid background in theatre technology, live sound engineering, lighting design, or AV installation.
Knowledgeable about stage safety, electrical safety, and relevant technical standards.
Practical, resourceful, and calm under pressure when handling live performance environments.
Highly organised, methodical, and able to manage multiple technical requirements simultaneously.
Passionate about the performing arts and committed to supporting student creativity and learning.
Friendly, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with students, staff, and external contractors.
Flexible in your approach to working hours to accommodate school shows and evening events.
Previous experience working as a technician in a theatre, school, or entertainment venue is advantageous, though we will also consider enthusiastic candidates with a strong technical qualification or live production background.
