Behaviour Manager - Secondary School - Huddersfield
Behaviour Manager - Secondary School - Huddersfield
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale
Do you have experience supporting young people with behaviour and engagement and the confidence to work with students who may require additional structure? A secondary school in Huddersfield is looking for an experienced Behaviour Manager to join its pastoral team on a full-time, permanent basis.
This is a hands-on position for someone who believes that high expectations and appropriate support should work together. You will play a central role in helping the school maintain positive behaviour standards while supporting students to understand the consequences of their choices and develop more successful approaches to school.
The successful candidate will be calm, consistent and confident. You will need to be able to deal with challenging situations without becoming confrontational and should be comfortable working with students, families, teachers and senior leaders.
School Information
This is a well-established secondary school in Huddersfield with clear expectations around behaviour, attendance and student conduct.
The school aims to create an environment where students can learn without unnecessary disruption while ensuring pupils who struggle with behaviour receive appropriate support.
The Behaviour Manager will work closely with the pastoral team, Heads of Year, senior leaders and teaching staff. The role combines immediate behaviour support with longer-term intervention, meaning you will need to look beyond individual incidents and identify recurring patterns.
The school expects behaviour systems to be applied consistently. Staff work together to ensure students understand expectations and that interventions are followed through.
Behaviour Manager - Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
Monitoring student behaviour throughout the school day.
Supporting staff when behaviour incidents occur.
Responding to significant behaviour concerns promptly.
Managing agreed behaviour interventions.
Monitoring students placed on behaviour support plans.
Maintaining accurate records of incidents and interventions.
Reviewing behaviour patterns and identifying recurring concerns.
Supporting Heads of Year and pastoral leaders.
Working with students to establish clear behaviour targets.
Holding restorative conversations with students.
Supporting reintegration following periods of exclusion or removal from lessons.
Communicating with parents and carers regarding behaviour concerns.
Attending behaviour-related meetings.
Supporting staff with consistent application of behaviour procedures.
Monitoring punctuality and lesson attendance where linked to behaviour.
Supporting students who struggle to follow classroom routines.
Helping students understand school expectations.
Providing regular feedback to relevant members of staff.
Contributing to individual student support plans.
Supporting behaviour reviews.
Identifying when a student requires additional pastoral or specialist support.
Escalating safeguarding concerns appropriately.
Assisting with school-wide behaviour initiatives.
Contributing to the development of positive behaviour strategies.
You will spend a significant amount of time working directly with students. Some situations may require you to intervene quickly, while others will involve longer conversations aimed at understanding what caused a particular incident.
The successful candidate should therefore be able to balance accountability with support.
Behaviour Intervention
A major part of the role will involve helping students develop strategies that allow them to manage their behaviour more successfully.
This could involve agreeing short-term targets, reviewing progress, discussing triggers or helping students understand how their behaviour affects others.
You will need to be consistent. Students should understand that expectations apply to everyone, but they should also feel that staff are willing to help them improve.
Working with Staff
The Behaviour Manager will support teaching staff by providing practical assistance when behaviour concerns arise.
You may help colleagues understand a student's behaviour plan, provide feedback following an incident or contribute to meetings reviewing ongoing concerns.
Strong communication will be essential because successful behaviour management depends on staff applying expectations consistently.
Working with Parents and Carers
You will regularly communicate with parents and carers. Conversations may relate to individual incidents, repeated concerns, behaviour targets or progress.
You should be able to communicate clearly without being unnecessarily confrontational. The objective should be to establish a constructive relationship focused on helping the student improve.
Behaviour Manager - Experience and Requirements
The school would ideally like someone with previous experience in behaviour management, pastoral support, youth work or education.
Applicants should demonstrate:
Previous experience working with secondary-aged young people.
Experience supporting behaviour management.
Confidence dealing with challenging behaviour.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm under pressure.
Consistent and fair approach.
Ability to build professional relationships with students.
Good understanding of behaviour intervention strategies.
Strong organisation and record keeping.
Ability to communicate with parents and carers.
Ability to work effectively with teachers and senior leaders.
Good IT skills.
Ability to identify patterns in behaviour.
Understanding of safeguarding.
Commitment to inclusion and student wellbeing.
Resilience and professional judgement.
A relevant qualification in education, youth work, behaviour support or pastoral care would be advantageous but relevant experience will also be considered.
Safeguarding
The successful candidate must understand that behaviour can sometimes be linked to wider safeguarding or welfare concerns. You will therefore be expected to follow the school's safeguarding procedures and report concerns through the correct channels.
Confidentiality and professional boundaries must be maintained at all times.
