Attendance & Admissions Officer - Primary School - Stockport
Attendance & Admissions Officer - Primary School - Stockport
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale
Are you highly organised, confident speaking with parents and committed to helping children receive the support they need to attend school regularly? A welcoming primary school in Stockport is seeking an experienced Attendance & Admissions Officer to take responsibility for the day-to-day administration of attendance and admissions.
This is an important role within the school. The successful candidate will work closely with families, teachers, pastoral colleagues and senior leaders to maintain accurate attendance information, follow up unexplained absences and ensure admissions processes are completed efficiently.
The position would suit an administrator who is comfortable working with sensitive information and understands that attendance is closely linked to children's educational progress, wellbeing and safeguarding.
School Information
The school is an established primary school in Stockport with a strong focus on providing children with a positive start to their education. The school works closely with families and recognises that effective communication between home and school is essential.
The wider support team works collaboratively to identify barriers to attendance and ensure that concerns are addressed at an appropriate stage. The successful Attendance & Admissions Officer will therefore need to be both organised and approachable.
The school maintains clear attendance procedures and expects accurate records to be kept throughout the academic year. The role will involve both routine administration and proactive communication with families.
Admissions are also an important part of the position. You will help ensure that new pupils are registered correctly, records are complete and families receive the relevant information before their child joins the school.
Attendance & Admissions Officer - Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will take responsibility for a broad range of attendance and admissions duties, including:
Monitoring daily pupil attendance and identifying unexplained absences.
Contacting parents and carers regarding attendance concerns.
Recording reasons for absence accurately on the school's system.
Following up persistent or unexplained absence in line with school procedures.
Preparing attendance information and reports for senior leaders.
Identifying emerging attendance patterns and bringing concerns to the attention of the appropriate staff.
Supporting meetings with parents where attendance has become a concern.
Maintaining accurate attendance records.
Ensuring attendance data is entered promptly and correctly.
Working with pastoral and safeguarding staff where attendance concerns may indicate a wider issue.
Supporting the school with attendance improvement initiatives.
Preparing relevant documentation for attendance meetings.
Maintaining appropriate records of communication with families.
Supporting admissions enquiries from prospective families.
Processing admission documentation and ensuring required information is received.
Maintaining accurate pupil admission records.
Supporting new starters and their families through the registration process.
Liaising with relevant staff regarding pupil start dates and arrangements.
Updating internal systems when pupils join or leave the school.
Assisting with the preparation of admissions-related correspondence.
Responding to parent queries professionally and promptly.
The role will require excellent attention to detail because even small errors in attendance or pupil records can have wider implications.
You will also need to be confident having sometimes difficult conversations with parents. The successful candidate should be able to explain the school's expectations clearly while remaining respectful and understanding.
Attendance and Safeguarding
Attendance can sometimes be an early indicator that a child or family requires additional support. You will therefore work closely with the pastoral and safeguarding teams when appropriate.
You will need to recognise when an attendance concern goes beyond routine administration and must be escalated. You will not be expected to manage safeguarding concerns independently, but you will be expected to follow school procedures accurately and promptly.
Confidentiality is particularly important because you will have access to sensitive information about children and families.
Working with Families
The successful candidate will have regular contact with parents and carers. Some families may simply require a reminder about attendance procedures, while others may need more structured support.
A professional but empathetic approach will be essential. You should be able to communicate the importance of regular attendance without making conversations unnecessarily confrontational.
You will also work with teachers and senior staff to ensure that relevant information is shared. Good communication and accurate record keeping will be central to the role.
Attendance & Admissions Officer - Experience and Requirements
The school is looking for someone with previous administrative experience and, ideally, experience in attendance, admissions, education administration or a related environment.
Applicants should have:
Previous experience in administration.
Experience working with attendance or admissions would be advantageous.
Excellent organisational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication.
Confidence communicating with parents and carers.
Good attention to detail.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Experience using databases or management information systems.
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
Confidence working with sensitive or challenging situations.
A calm, professional and approachable manner.
Commitment to safeguarding and pupil welfare.
Experience with school systems such as Arbor, SIMS or Bromcom would be useful.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is an essential part of the role. The successful candidate must understand that attendance information can sometimes relate directly to a child's welfare.
You will be expected to follow all school safeguarding procedures, maintain professional boundaries and report concerns through the correct channels.
