Food Technology Teacher Role in a Faith Secondary School

A welcoming and well-established Faith Secondary School in Wigan is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Food Technology Teacher to join its successful Design & Technology Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher who is passionate about practical education and enjoys helping young people develop both creative and technical skills.

Food Technology continues to be a valued subject within secondary education, combining practical cookery with nutrition, food science, health and wellbeing. Recent Food Technology opportunities in Wigan have particularly focused on teachers who can confidently deliver engaging practical and theoretical lessons across KS3 and KS4.

The Role

You will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality Food Technology lessons across KS3 and KS4, with the potential to teach KS5 where appropriate. Lessons should combine practical food preparation with relevant theoretical knowledge, ensuring students understand the nutritional, scientific and cultural principles behind the subject.

You will encourage students to develop strong practical techniques while also teaching them about nutrition, food safety, ingredients, sustainability and food science. GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition experience would be particularly advantageous.

The role will also involve maintaining high standards of behaviour and safety within practical lessons, assessing student progress and working collaboratively with colleagues across the wider Design & Technology Department.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons across KS3 and KS4

• Teach practical cookery alongside food science and nutritional theory

• Prepare students for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition where required

• Develop students' confidence with a wide range of ingredients and cooking techniques

• Create practical activities that encourage creativity and independence

• Assess and monitor student progress effectively

• Provide constructive feedback to support academic and practical development

• Maintain excellent standards of food hygiene and classroom safety

• Ensure students follow appropriate health and safety procedures

• Manage behaviour effectively during practical activities

• Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development

• Work collaboratively with technicians and other teaching staff

• Support enrichment activities and wider school initiatives

• Promote healthy, sustainable and responsible approaches to food

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Food Technology, Food Preparation and Nutrition, or a closely related Design & Technology discipline.

Essential Requirements

• QTS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification

• Experience teaching Food Technology at secondary level

• Strong practical and theoretical subject knowledge

• Confidence teaching KS3 and KS4

• Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills

• Good understanding of food hygiene and practical health and safety

• Strong organisational and communication skills

• Ability to differentiate lessons for students of varying abilities

• A commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing

Desirable

• Experience teaching GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

• Experience teaching at KS5

• Knowledge of food science, nutrition and sustainability

• Experience working with specialist food technology equipment

• Previous experience within a secondary Design & Technology Department
