Science Technician | Secondary Academy & Sixth Form | Walthamstow
CORE PURPOSE
We are seeking a methodical, precise, and proactive Science Technician to provide essential technical support across our busy Science department for Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5. Reporting to the Senior Science Technician, the successful candidate will prepare equipment and chemical solutions, set up practical physics apparatus, maintain laboratory safety standards, and ensure smooth daily operations across all teaching laboratories.
THE SCHOOL
Set on a modern, vibrant campus featuring multi-story science suites, dedicated preparation rooms, and specialized chemical stores, this secondary academy and sixth form serves over 1,100 students aged 11–18 in East London. The school delivers a broad scientific curriculum spanning GCSE Combined Science, Separate Sciences, and A-Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The technical support team acts as a vital foundation for the faculty, enabling safe, hands-on experimental learning and supporting extracurricular STEM projects.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Practical Preparation & Setup: Prepare chemical solutions, biological specimens, and physics apparatus, delivering materials to laboratories ahead of practical lessons and clearing equipment promptly afterward.
Health & Safety Compliance: Uphold safety protocols in accordance with COSHH regulations and CLEAPSS guidelines, ensuring correct storage, handling, and safe disposal of chemical waste and biological hazards.
Stock Control & Inventory: Monitor consumables, chemical stocks, and glassware, assisting with stock audits, logging deliveries, and placing orders for replacement materials.
Equipment Maintenance: Clean, service, and calibrate laboratory instruments—including microscopes, gas taps, Bunsen burners, and digital meters—arranging professional repairs when necessary.
Technical Assistance: Support teaching staff with practical demonstrations, assist with open evening scientific displays, and maintain clean, organized prep rooms and laboratory environments.
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: Qualified to A-Level standard or equivalent in a scientific discipline (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) or holding a recognized qualification in Laboratory and Technical Skills (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3).
Experience: Previous experience as a science technician in an educational setting (secondary school, academy, or college) or a laboratory environment is highly desirable.
Skills: Solid understanding of school laboratory health and safety regulations (COSHH/CLEAPSS), strong practical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively under lesson schedules.
