A welcoming and well-established faith primary school in Hackney is seeking a reliable and proactive Caretaker to join its premises team on a full-time basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced caretaker, premises assistant or site professional who takes pride in maintaining a safe, clean and well-organised school environment.

The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring the school site remains safe, secure and fully operational each day. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team and other members of the premises team, you will help maintain the buildings, grounds and facilities to a high standard.

This is a practical and varied position, ideally suited to someone who enjoys being hands-on, takes initiative and can respond calmly and efficiently to the day-to-day needs of a busy primary school.

The Role

As Caretaker, you will take responsibility for the general upkeep and security of the school premises. Your duties will cover a range of maintenance, health and safety, security and site-related responsibilities.

You will be expected to identify issues before they become significant problems, carry out basic repairs where appropriate and ensure that any specialist maintenance requirements are reported and followed up promptly.

The role will also involve preparing the school site for the beginning of each day and ensuring the premises are secure at the end of the school day.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out daily checks of the school buildings, grounds and facilities.

• Ensure the school site is safe, secure and well maintained.

• Complete basic maintenance and minor repairs where appropriate.

• Report larger maintenance issues and liaise with contractors when required.

• Monitor heating, lighting, plumbing and other essential services.

• Assist with health and safety checks across the school site.

• Maintain appropriate records relating to premises and maintenance.

• Support the safe movement and storage of equipment and furniture.

• Help prepare rooms and facilities for school activities and events.

• Monitor the condition of external areas, playgrounds and communal spaces.

• Assist with deliveries and ensure goods are stored safely.

• Carry out opening and closing procedures as required.

• Respond promptly to maintenance and site-related issues.

• Work closely with school leaders to ensure the premises meet required standards.
