Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Dependent on experience
Attendance Officer
Are you an organised, proactive and confident administrator with a genuine interest in supporting young people to succeed? An Outstanding Secondary School in Haringey is looking to appoint an experienced Attendance Officer to join its dedicated pastoral and administration team on a full-time, permanent basis.
This is an important role within the school, with attendance playing a central part in ensuring students make consistent progress and have the opportunity to fully engage with their education. The successful candidate will take responsibility for monitoring attendance and punctuality, identifying patterns of concern and working closely with students, parents, carers and school staff to improve attendance wherever possible.
You will be responsible for keeping accurate and up-to-date attendance records and ensuring that unexplained or concerning absences are followed up promptly. This will involve working closely with the pastoral team, Heads of Year, safeguarding staff and senior leaders to ensure that attendance concerns are identified early and appropriate action is taken.
The role will involve regular communication with parents and carers. You will need to be confident having professional but sometimes challenging conversations about attendance, while remaining supportive and focused on finding practical solutions.
You will also analyse attendance information to identify individual and cohort-level trends. This could include monitoring persistent absence, lateness, patterns of absence and attendance differences between groups of students.
The successful candidate will need to be highly organised and able to manage a busy workload. Attendance issues can arise throughout the school day, so you will need to prioritise effectively while ensuring important follow-up actions are completed.
Attendance Officer - School Information
This is an Outstanding Secondary School in Haringey with high expectations for both academic achievement and student wellbeing.
The school is committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or individual circumstances. Staff work together closely to remove barriers to learning and provide students with the support they need to make positive progress.
The school has a strong pastoral structure, with close communication between teaching staff, Heads of Year, safeguarding professionals, senior leaders and administrative colleagues.
Attendance is viewed as an important part of the school's wider approach to student success. The Attendance Officer will therefore work as part of a wider team rather than operating independently from the pastoral structure.
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their education and develop positive attitudes towards school. Staff maintain clear expectations while ensuring that students who experience difficulties are offered appropriate support.
The successful candidate will be joining a professional and collaborative environment where communication, consistency and accurate record keeping are highly valued.
Attendance Officer - Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
Monitoring daily attendance and punctuality
Following up unexplained student absences
Contacting parents and carers regarding attendance concerns
Maintaining accurate attendance records
Monitoring patterns of absence and lateness
Identifying students at risk of persistent absence
Producing attendance information and reports
Working with Heads of Year and pastoral leaders
Supporting attendance improvement plans

Contributing to strategies designed to improve whole-school attendance
You will need to ensure that attendance information is recorded accurately and that follow-up actions are completed within appropriate timescales.
Supporting Students and Families
A major part of the position will involve working directly with students and families.
Not every absence is straightforward, and the successful candidate will need to approach attendance concerns with professionalism, empathy and good judgement.
You may be required to meet with students who are regularly late or absent and help them understand the impact that attendance can have on their learning and progress.
You will also communicate with parents and carers where attendance becomes a concern. This could involve explaining school expectations, discussing barriers to attendance and identifying appropriate next steps.
The school is looking for someone who can be firm when necessary while maintaining positive relationships with families.
You will also need to understand when a concern should be escalated to a senior member of staff or safeguarding professional.
Attendance Monitoring and Data
The successful candidate will be comfortable working with attendance data and identifying patterns.
You may be required to prepare regular attendance reports for Heads of Year and senior leaders, highlighting students or groups whose attendance requires additional attention.
Good attention to detail is essential because small errors in attendance records can affect wider reporting and intervention.
You will need to be confident using computer systems and spreadsheets and willing to learn the school's attendance and management information systems.
Attendance Officer - Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
Previous attendance, pastoral or school administration experience
Experience working in a secondary school desirable
Strong administrative skills
Excellent attention to detail
Experience maintaining confidential records
Confidence working with attendance data
Good IT skills
Experience using school management information systems desirable
Excellent communication skills
Confidence communicating with parents and carers
Ability to handle sensitive conversations professionally
Strong organisational and time-management skills
Ability to prioritise competing demands
A calm and professional approach
Understanding of safeguarding within an education setting
Commitment to improving outcomes for young people
Experience within an education, local authority, safeguarding, family support or administrative environment would be advantageous.
Working Environment
This is a busy role where priorities can change quickly. The successful candidate will need to remain organised and focused throughout the school day.
You will become a familiar point of contact for students, parents, teachers and pastoral staff. Building positive working relationships will be important, but so will maintaining clear professional boundaries.
The school values staff who take ownership of their responsibilities and are willing to identify problems rather than simply report them. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas and practical approaches to improving attendance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced administrator or pastoral professional who wants to play a meaningful role in supporting students and helping improve their engagement with education.
Salary
The salary for this Attendance Officer position will be dependent on experience.
