Art Technician

Are you a creative, practical and organised individual with a genuine interest in Art and working with children? A well-established Primary School in Bristol is looking for an enthusiastic Art Technician to provide practical and creative support across the school.

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with art materials, preparing resources and helping teachers create engaging practical learning experiences.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers to prepare materials, equipment and creative resources for Art lessons and wider school projects. You will help ensure classrooms and dedicated creative spaces are properly prepared before lessons and that students have access to the materials they need to develop their artistic skills.

The role will involve working with a wide variety of materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, collage, printing, sculpture, textiles and mixed-media activities. You will need to be comfortable preparing resources for different age groups and adapting your approach depending on the activity being delivered.

You will also take responsibility for keeping art resources organised. This will include monitoring stock, maintaining equipment, preparing materials, organising storage areas and informing staff when supplies need to be replenished.

The role will extend beyond individual Art lessons. You may support whole-school displays, exhibitions, seasonal projects, assemblies, enrichment activities and creative events. You could be involved in preparing display boards, mounting children's artwork, creating exhibition spaces and helping students present their work professionally.

Art Technician - Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

• Preparing Art materials and equipment for lessons

• Supporting teachers with practical Art activities

• Preparing resources for different year groups

• Organising paints, brushes, paper, card and specialist materials

• Supporting drawing and painting activities

• Preparing materials for printing projects

• Supporting sculpture and three-dimensional work

• Assisting with textiles and mixed-media activities

• Maintaining Art equipment and resources

• Monitoring stock levels

• Assisting with ordering materials

• Organising cupboards, storage areas and creative spaces

• Keeping practical areas clean and organised

• Supporting teachers with demonstrations

• Helping prepare artwork for displays

• Mounting and presenting pupils' work

• Assisting with school exhibitions

• Supporting creative projects and enrichment activities

• Helping prepare resources for special events and themed days

• Following appropriate health and safety procedures

• Reporting damaged or unsuitable equipment

• Ensuring materials are stored appropriately

The successful candidate will need to be proactive. Rather than waiting for teachers to request every item, you will be expected to understand what is required and prepare resources in advance.

Supporting Pupils

Although the role is primarily technical and practical, you will have regular contact with pupils.

You may assist teachers during practical activities, demonstrate how particular materials or equipment should be used and help students access resources safely.

The successful candidate will need to be patient and approachable, particularly when working with younger pupils who are developing their confidence with creative materials.

You should be able to maintain clear boundaries and understand that safeguarding and pupil wellbeing are everyone's responsibility within a school.

You will also need to recognise that children will have different levels of confidence and ability. Supporting teachers in creating an environment where pupils feel comfortable experimenting and making mistakes will be an important part of the role.

Art Technician - Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

• Previous Art Technician, Arts Assistant, Studio Assistant or similar experience

• Art, Design or a related qualification desirable

• Strong practical knowledge of Art materials and techniques

• Confidence working with a range of creative media

• Good organisational skills

• Excellent attention to detail

• Ability to maintain equipment and resources

• Ability to prepare materials efficiently

• Good communication skills

• Creative and proactive approach

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Professional and reliable attitude

• Commitment to safeguarding and pupil welfare

Previous experience working in a school would be advantageous, but candidates with relevant experience from studios, workshops, galleries, community arts projects or other creative environments will also be considered.
