Role: Teacher of History (KS3–KS5)
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Start Date: September 2026
Salary: Highly Competitive
Are you a History Teacher who enjoys getting students to ask questions, challenge assumptions and understand why the past still matters today?
An outstanding secondary school in Stevenage is looking for an enthusiastic History Teacher to join its department. They are looking for someone who knows their subject well, enjoys working with young people and can make History engaging without losing the academic side of the subject.
This is a great opportunity for a teacher who wants students to do more than remember dates. The school wants them to understand evidence, consider different perspectives and develop their own well-reasoned arguments.
The Role
Teach History across KS3–KS5, covering a range of historical periods and topics.
Help students develop their knowledge while encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions.
Teach students how to analyse primary sources and consider different historical interpretations.
Support GCSE and A-Level students with essays, source questions and examination preparation.
Encourage wider reading and independent research beyond the normal curriculum.
Use discussion, debate, sources, documentaries and other resources to bring historical topics to life.
Support History clubs, trips, competitions and other opportunities outside the classroom.
Create a classroom where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and challenging interpretations respectfully.
The Candidate
We're looking for a History Teacher who genuinely enjoys the subject and can pass that enthusiasm on to students.
A degree in History or a related subject would be desirable, together with relevant secondary teaching experience. Experience teaching GCSE or A-Level History would be an advantage.
You'll need strong subject knowledge, but you should also be able to explain complicated historical events and ideas in a way that students can understand.
You'll be expected to support students who lack confidence while also pushing stronger students to produce more detailed, independent and sophisticated arguments.
The Environment
You'll be joining a successful History department within an outstanding secondary school in Stevenage.
The school has high expectations for its students but also recognises the importance of making learning enjoyable. Staff are encouraged to bring their own ideas into lessons and become involved in wider school activities.
There are opportunities to contribute to trips, clubs, debates and other History-related enrichment.
