Science Technician

A successful Secondary School in the London Borough of Islington is seeking an organised, practical and enthusiastic Science Technician to join its established Science department on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with laboratory or scientific experience who enjoys practical work and wants to play a direct role in supporting high-quality Science teaching. You will work alongside teachers across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, ensuring laboratories are prepared, equipment is maintained and practical activities can be delivered safely and effectively.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing equipment and materials for lessons across KS3, KS4 and KS5. This may include setting up experiments, preparing solutions, organising apparatus, checking equipment and ensuring teachers have everything they require before lessons begin.

You will also maintain laboratory stock, monitor consumables and assist with ordering resources. The role requires excellent organisation because you may be preparing practical work for several different classes in one day.

Health and safety will be an important part of your responsibilities. You will help ensure chemicals and equipment are stored correctly, maintain appropriate records and follow COSHH and other relevant procedures. You will also identify faulty or damaged equipment and ensure it is repaired, replaced or removed from use where necessary.

During examination periods, you may support the preparation of practical assessments and ensure the relevant equipment and materials are ready. There will also be opportunities to support science clubs, STEM activities, open evenings and wider enrichment.

Science Technician - Responsibilities

• Prepare equipment and resources for practical Science lessons

• Support Biology, Chemistry and Physics teaching

• Set up experiments and demonstrations

• Prepare solutions and materials where appropriate

• Maintain laboratory equipment

• Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering

• Store chemicals and materials safely

• Maintain appropriate COSHH documentation

• Carry out routine equipment checks

• Identify damaged or faulty equipment

• Support GCSE and A-Level practical assessments

• Prepare resources for examination periods

• Maintain clean, safe and organised laboratories

• Assist with science clubs and STEM enrichment

• Support teachers during practical demonstrations

• Follow school health and safety procedures

• Maintain accurate records relating to equipment and resources

You will need to be proactive and organised, anticipating departmental requirements and preparing resources in good time.

Science Technician - Experience and Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous Science Technician or laboratory experience

• Science-related qualification desirable

• Practical knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics

• Experience working with laboratory equipment

• Understanding of laboratory health and safety

• COSHH knowledge desirable

• Excellent organisational skills

• Strong attention to detail

• Ability to manage competing deadlines

• Good communication skills

• Ability to work independently and within a team

Experience within a secondary school would be advantageous, although candidates from colleges, universities, laboratories, healthcare or scientific industries with relevant experience will also be considered.

The Science Department

The Science department is committed to giving students regular opportunities to investigate scientific concepts practically. Students are encouraged to ask questions, test hypotheses, analyse results and evaluate evidence.

The Science Technician will be central to making these opportunities possible. From preparing a simple KS3 investigation to supporting complex GCSE or A-Level practical work, the role offers variety and responsibility.

You will work closely with teachers and other support staff and will become an important part of the department's day-to-day operation.
