Do you enjoy practical, hands-on work and take pride in keeping buildings safe, secure and well maintained? A friendly Primary School in Reading is looking to appoint a dedicated School Caretaker to join its team on a full-time, permanent basis from September 2026.
This is a fantastic opportunity to become an integral member of a welcoming school community where your work will have a direct impact on the daily experience of pupils, staff and visitors. No two days are the same, with responsibilities ranging from general maintenance and security to supporting school events and ensuring the site remains in excellent condition throughout the year.
Working alongside the School Business Manager and leadership team, you'll help maintain a safe, compliant and inviting learning environment for everyone on site.
The Role
The School Caretaker will oversee the day-to-day maintenance and presentation of the school premises.
Responsibilities include:
Opening and locking the school each day
Carrying out routine maintenance, repairs and decorating
Maintaining the school grounds and outdoor areas
Completing regular health and safety inspections
Reporting and responding to maintenance issues promptly
Liaising with contractors and monitoring works on site
Setting up classrooms, halls and outdoor spaces for school activities and events
Ensuring the site remains clean, secure and compliant with health and safety regulations

The Successful Candidate
The school is seeking a reliable and proactive individual with experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities or building services.
The successful candidate will be practical, organised and able to work independently while managing a varied workload. Knowledge of health and safety procedures and a commitment to maintaining high standards across the school site are essential.
Salary & Benefits
£27,500 – £32,500 per annum
