Food Technology Teacher | Established Community School | Wigan
CORE PURPOSE
We require an enthusiastic, safety-conscious Food Technology Teacher to deliver practical and theoretical Design & Technology (Food & Nutrition) lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The role involves developing pupils' practical culinary skills, teaching nutrition and food science, maintaining rigorous kitchen hygiene standards, and preparing exam cohorts for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition examinations.
THE SCHOOL
An 11–16 community secondary school located in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The school operates with a structured, clear behaviour framework to ensure quiet, focused classroom environments. The Design & Technology department features modern food technology rooms supported by a dedicated technician to manage ingredient prep, equipment maintenance, and health and safety compliance, keeping staff workload sustainable.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Practical & Theory Delivery: Plan and deliver structured practical cookery sessions and food science theory lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
Culinary Skills & Nutrition: Teach core food preparation techniques, nutrition, food safety, and hygiene standards to build pupil confidence and independence in the kitchen.
GCSE Preparation & NEA Supervision: Prepare Year 11 classes for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition examinations, including supervising and assessing non-exam assessment (NEA) practical tasks and written portfolios.
Kitchen Health & Safety: Ensure strict hygiene, food storage, and safety routines are maintained across all food rooms in accordance with standard environmental health guidelines.
Form Tutor Duties: Take responsibility for a tutor group, managing daily registration, routines, and parent contact.
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Food Technology, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, or a related discipline. A Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable.
Experience: Open to both experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers (ECTs) with a strong track record during practical teaching sessions.
Skills: Strong practical cookery skills, excellent room management during practical work, clear communication, and an approachable manner.
