Salary: £100 – £140 per day (dependent on experience) / £22,000 – £27,000 per annum equivalent

About the Role
Wayman Education is currently recruiting a resilient, empathetic, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join an encouraging secondary school in Newcastle upon Tyne.
In this vital pastoral role, you will work directly with pupils who face social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges or exhibit barriers to learning. Serving as a positive role model, you will deliver targeted 1-to-1 and small group interventions aimed at helping students manage their emotions, improve attendance, build resilience, and successfully re-engage with classroom learning.
Key Responsibilities
Targeted Mentoring: Provide dedicated 1-to-1 and small group mentoring sessions for students struggling with behaviour, emotional regulation, or low academic engagement.
De-escalation & Support: Implement de-escalation techniques and follow individual behaviour plans to manage challenging classroom situations calmly and effectively.
Progress Tracking: Monitor and record student behaviour patterns, attendance improvements, and pastoral milestones, reporting regularly to the SENCO and Pastoral Team.
Collaborative Working: Partner with class teachers, pastoral leads, and parents to ensure a consistent, supportive approach to student development.
Positive Re-engagement: Support students in developing coping mechanisms, self-esteem, and social skills to encourage successful integration into mainstream lessons.
Requirements
Experience: Previous experience working as a Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Learning Support Assistant, or Pastoral Assistant in a UK school or youth setting.
Skills: Exceptional de-escalation, conflict-resolution, and active listening skills, with a patient, resilient, and non-judgmental approach.
Desirable Qualifications: Team Teach, MAPA, or accredited de-escalation training is highly advantageous.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with disengaged or vulnerable young people.
Vetting: An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service (or willingness to complete a new application).
