Caretaker | Supportive Secondary School | Bedford
A well-established secondary school in Bedford is looking to appoint a Caretaker to join the premises team from September 2026.
This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for an experienced caretaker or maintenance professional who enjoys keeping buildings safe, secure, and running efficiently. You'll play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operation of the school and helping create an environment where pupils can thrive.
The Role
Working closely with the Site Manager, you'll help maintain the school site to a high standard while ensuring health and safety remains a priority.
Responsibilities include:
Opening and closing the school site
Carrying out general maintenance and minor repairs
Undertaking routine health and safety inspections
Maintaining the buildings, grounds, and outdoor areas
Preparing rooms for school events and activities
Assisting with deliveries and contractor access
Reporting maintenance issues and supporting site compliance

The Successful Candidate
The ideal candidate will be practical, reliable, and able to use their initiative to manage a variety of maintenance tasks.
Previous experience as a Caretaker, Site Assistant, Premises Assistant, Facilities Assistant, or Maintenance Operative is desirable. Experience working within a school is beneficial, but candidates with transferable skills from other sectors are also encouraged to apply.
As part of the school's safer recruitment procedures, references from your current (or most recent) employer and a previous employer will be required before an interview can be arranged.
Salary & Benefits
£28,000–£32,000 per annum (depending on experience)
