English Teaching Role in a Secondary School
A well-established secondary school in Southampton is seeking to appoint an English Teacher to join its department from September. This is a full-time role within a supportive and ambitious school that values literacy, creativity, and high-quality teaching.
English is a core subject within the school, with students encouraged to develop strong reading, writing, analytical, and communication skills. The department has a strong track record of positive GCSE and A-Level outcomes.
About the Role
You will teach English across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5, delivering engaging and well-structured lessons in both English Language and English Literature.
Students will study a wide range of texts including Shakespeare, modern prose, poetry, and non-fiction, while developing skills in analysis, interpretation, creative writing, and extended essay writing.
You will prepare students for GCSE and A-Level English examinations, supporting them in building confidence with exam technique, critical thinking, and written expression.
You will work collaboratively within a successful English department committed to maintaining high standards of teaching and learning.
Key Responsibilities
Teach English across KS3, KS4, and KS5
Deliver lessons in English Language and English Literature
Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level English examinations
Assess student work and provide clear, constructive feedback
Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records
Contribute to curriculum planning and departmental development
Support literacy initiatives and enrichment activities
Maintain high standards of classroom behaviour and engagement

Candidate Requirements
Essential Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Experience teaching English at secondary level
Ability to teach KS3 and KS4 confidently
Strong subject knowledge in English Language and Literature
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Desirable
Experience teaching A-Level English
Experience preparing students for GCSE and A-Level examinations
Ability to contribute to literacy or enrichment activities
