The role involves challenging pupils to merge engineering, materials science, and modern manufacturing concepts with precise physical and digital portfolio prototyping.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Curriculum Delivery & Engagement: Plan and facilitate structured, demanding DT lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, pushing pupils to achieve top-tier marks in GCSE design and vocational specifications.
Workshop Safety Leadership: Maintain rigorous health and safety compliance throughout all workshops, ensuring flawless machinery maintenance, complete personal protective equipment (PPE) discipline, and safe tool usage.
CAD/CAM Integration: Guide pupils in leveraging modern technology, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and computer-aided design software, to produce sophisticated, high-quality project portfolios.
Material Inventory Coordination: Manage technical workshops efficiently by organising materials, tracking equipment stock levels, and working closely with technician support to prepare resources for complex practical sessions.
Pastoral & Form Tutoring: Direct a dedicated form group, actively executing morning registration routines, tracking attendance profiles, and acting as the consistent point of contact for parent communications.
ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE
Foundation School Framework: Operating under a Foundation School framework, our institution is maintained by the local authority but managed by our own governing body, which holds the land and employs the staff directly. This structure fosters a strong, independent campus culture deeply anchored in the regional community.
Behaviour Systems: The campus implements highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that maintain a quiet, respectful, and orderly atmosphere, ensuring workshop spaces remain exceptionally calm, focused, and secure for technical production.
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching credential, alongside a strong honours degree in Product Design, Engineering, or an allied technical discipline.
Technical Accreditation: Up-to-date health and safety certifications for secondary wood and metal workshop machinery (such as DATA accreditation) are highly desirable.
Pedagogical Standards: A proven capacity or clear commitment to securing outstanding progress outcomes for pupils through clear, structured instruction and rigorous portfolio guidance.
REGIONAL CONTEXT
Industrial Craft & Manufacturing Hub: Based in Walsall, the school operates within a Black Country town world-renowned for its historic leather craftsmanship and traditional metalworking industries, which are now evolving into modern engineering and advanced manufacturing networks.
Connectivity: The area offers excellent West Midlands transport links, providing straightforward local commuting options via major arterial routes (M6 corridor, A34) and frequent rail links from Walsall station connecting straight through to Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton.
