Welfare Officer Role in a Primary School
A caring and inclusive primary school in Reading is seeking to appoint a Welfare Officer to join its pastoral support team. This is a full-time role within a supportive school environment that places strong emphasis on pupil wellbeing, safeguarding, and pastoral care.
The welfare team plays a key role in supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing, attendance, safeguarding, and day-to-day care to ensure all children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
About the Role
You will provide pastoral and welfare support to pupils, helping to maintain a safe, nurturing, and positive school environment.
The role involves supporting pupils with emotional wellbeing, first aid needs, behaviour support, attendance concerns, and communication with parents and carers where appropriate.
You will work closely with teaching staff, safeguarding leads, and external agencies to ensure pupils receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Key Responsibilities
Support pupil wellbeing, safeguarding, and pastoral care
Provide first aid and welfare support where required
Work with staff to support attendance and behaviour strategies
Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies
Maintain accurate welfare and safeguarding records
Support pupils with emotional and social needs
Contribute to safeguarding and child protection procedures
Promote a safe, caring, and inclusive school environment

Candidate Requirements
Essential Requirements
Experience working with children or young people (school experience desirable)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Calm, caring, and professional approach
Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality
Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and families
Desirable
First aid qualification or willingness to train
Experience in pastoral, welfare, or safeguarding support
Experience working in a school or education setting
