Attendance Officer Role in a Secondary School
A large secondary school in Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Attendance Officer to join its pastoral and safeguarding team. This is a full-time role within a busy and supportive school that places strong emphasis on student welfare, safeguarding, and improving attendance outcomes.
The attendance team plays a vital role in ensuring students attend school regularly, supporting early intervention strategies, and working closely with families and external agencies.
About the Role
You will be responsible for monitoring student attendance, identifying patterns of absence, and working proactively to improve attendance across the school.
The role involves daily monitoring of registers, contacting parents/carers regarding absences, and working with pastoral staff to support students at risk of persistent absence.
You will contribute to safeguarding processes and help ensure all students are engaged, supported, and able to access learning consistently.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor daily student attendance and punctuality
Follow up on absences via phone, email, and written communication
Maintain accurate attendance records and reports
Work with pastoral and safeguarding teams to support interventions
Identify and address patterns of persistent absence
Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies
Support strategies to improve whole-school attendance
Ensure compliance with safeguarding procedures

Candidate Requirements
Essential Requirements
Experience in administration, education, or pastoral support (school experience desirable)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Good organisational and IT skills
Ability to manage sensitive situations professionally
Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality
Desirable
Experience working in a school attendance or pastoral role
Familiarity with SIMS or school management systems
Knowledge of attendance legislation and procedures
