Chemistry Teacher | Secondary School & Sixth Form | Peterborough
The Opportunity
Peterborough is a city defined by rapid growth and a strong focus on environmental sustainability and engineering. We are seeking a dedicated Chemistry Teacher to join our Science faculty. In this role, you will be responsible for making the molecular world accessible to a diverse student body, helping them understand everything from the fundamental structure of the atom to the sophisticated chemical processes used in modern green energy and medicine.
The Department
You will join a forward-thinking Science team that emphasizes "Enquiry-Based Learning," where students are encouraged to ask "why" and "how" through hands-on experimentation.
The department features recently refurbished laboratories, a high-spec chemical stores area, and digital data-logging tools to allow for high-precision titration and thermal analysis.
We benefit from an expert technical team that ensures practical lessons are safe, well-resourced, and aligned with the latest CLEAPSS safety standards.
The school has strong community links with Peterborough’s burgeoning environmental tech sector, offering opportunities for students to see "industrial chemistry" in action through local site visits.
Core Responsibilities
Curriculum Delivery: Teaching Chemistry across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with a significant portion of the timetable dedicated to A-Level Chemistry (AQA or OCR).
Organic Synthesis: Leading students through the complexities of organic chemistry, including reaction mechanisms, functional group identification, and the synthesis of esters and aspirin.
Quantitative Chemistry: Helping students master "The Mole," stoichiometry, and gas volume calculations, bridging the gap between mathematical theory and practical application.
Practical Endorsement: Coordinating and assessing the Required Practical's for A-Level students, ensuring they develop the technical dexterity required for university-level science.
STEM Enrichment: Running the "Young Chemists" club and preparing students for regional competitions such as the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Top of the Bench.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject specialist who can inspire confidence in the lab and the classroom. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field.
Laboratory Expertise: A deep understanding of chemical safety and the ability to demonstrate complex practical's (such as reflux or fractional distillation) with clarity.
Pedagogical Range: The ability to differentiate complex concepts—like orbital hybridization or entropy—for students with varying levels of prior knowledge.
Analytical Mindset: A teacher who uses assessment data to identify misconceptions early and provides targeted feedback to drive student progress.
Why Join Us?
A school that treats Chemistry as a cornerstone of the academic curriculum, with high enrolment at the post-16 level.
Access to a structured professional development program focused on "Active Chemistry" pedagogy and advanced laboratory management.
The opportunity to work in Peterborough, a city offering affordable living, a historic cathedral core, and some of the best rail links in the UK (just 45 minutes to London King's Cross).
A supportive, diverse staff culture that values collaborative planning and the sharing of best practices across the Science faculty.
