Design & Technology Teacher | Academy | Burton upon Trent
The Opportunity
Burton upon Trent is a town with a proud heritage of making and engineering—from its world-famous brewing history to its modern role at the heart of the Midlands' manufacturing corridor. We are seeking an innovative Design & Technology (D&T) Teacher to join our creative faculty. In this role, you will inspire students to solve real-world problems through design, moving from initial sketches to high-quality prototypes using both traditional craftsmanship and modern digital manufacturing.
The Department
You will work in a suite of specialized workshops, including dedicated spaces for resistant materials, electronics, and CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing).
The department is exceptionally well-resourced with industry-standard equipment, including laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers, and a range of traditional woodworking and metalworking machinery.
We prioritize a "Design Thinking" curriculum, where students are taught to research, iterate, and evaluate their ideas, preparing them for the fast-paced world of modern design and engineering.
We maintain strong local links with the region's engineering giants and creative industries, offering students insights into careers in product design, structural engineering, and sustainable manufacturing.
Core Responsibilities
Delivering high-impact practical lessons across a range of material areas, with a focus on Timbers, Polymers, and Metals.
Teaching students how to use CAD software (such as TechSoft 2D Design or SolidWorks) and translating those designs into physical products via CAM equipment.
Preparing Year 11 and Year 13 students for GCSE and A-Level examinations, with a heavy emphasis on the "Non-Examined Assessment" (NEA) design portfolio and practical outcomes.
Ensuring the highest standards of Health and Safety within the workshop, maintaining equipment and fostering a culture of safety and precision among students.
Leading extracurricular initiatives such as the "Greenpower" electric car challenge, "Young Engineer" awards, or product design clubs.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a maker and a thinker who can bridge the gap between creative flair and technical accuracy. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Engineering, or a related field.
A proven ability to teach a range of technical skills, from traditional joinery to advanced digital manufacturing.
Strong subject knowledge of material properties, manufacturing processes, and the environmental impact of design.
A commitment to maintaining a safe working environment in strict accordance with DATA (Design and Technology Association) and CLEAPSS guidelines.
Why Join Us?
A school that treats D&T as a flagship subject for the development of practical intelligence and creative problem-solving.
Access to a structured CPD program focused on both pedagogical innovation and technical upskilling in the latest manufacturing technologies.
A supportive, professional staff culture within a town that offers a high quality of life, affordable living, and deep-rooted industrial pride.
Located in a central Midlands hub with exceptional transport links to Derby, Lichfield, and Birmingham, and immediate access to the National Forest.
