The Opportunity

We are seeking an insightful and engaging Religious Education (RE) Teacher to join our Humanities faculty. In this role, you will be responsible for fostering a classroom environment where students can explore the world’s major religions, ethical philosophies, and contemporary moral issues with curiosity and respect. You will play a pivotal role in developing our students into informed, empathetic citizens of a global society.
The Department
You will join a collaborative Humanities team that views RE as a vital space for critical thinking, debate, and the promotion of social cohesion.
The department is well-resourced with a wide variety of sacred texts, contemporary media, and ethical case studies that reflect the diverse backgrounds of the Oldham community.
We prioritize an "Enquiry-Based" curriculum, moving beyond basic facts to explore the deeper philosophical and sociological impacts of faith and belief.
We benefit from strong local links with various faith leaders and community hubs, facilitating meaningful visits to places of worship and hosting diverse guest speakers.
Core Responsibilities
Delivering high-impact lessons that cover the core tenets of the world’s six major religions, alongside non-religious worldviews such as Humanism.
Facilitating balanced and rigorous classroom debates on complex ethical topics, ranging from medical ethics and environmental stewardship to social justice and human rights.
Preparing Year 11 and Year 13 students for GCSE and A-Level Religious Studies (AQA or Edexcel), focusing on the mastery of "Philosophy of Religion" and "Religious Ethics" modules.
Implementing effective literacy strategies to help students structure high-level evaluative essays and master specialized theological terminology.
Contributing to the school’s "SMSC" (Social, Moral, Spiritual, and Cultural) development, leading assemblies or workshops that celebrate diversity and shared values.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a specialist who is as passionate about philosophical enquiry as they are about cultural literacy. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Religious Studies, Philosophy, Theology, or a related Humanities field.
A proven ability to manage sensitive topics with neutrality and respect, fostering a safe space for students of all faiths and none.
Strong subject knowledge across a variety of theological and ethical frameworks, with a commitment to an inclusive and representative curriculum.
Excellent pedagogical skills, particularly the ability to use high-level questioning to challenge students' assumptions and deepen their understanding.
