Attendance Officer | Primary School | Birmingham
The Opportunity
In a city as large and fast-paced as Birmingham, ensuring that every child is in school and ready to learn is a vital mission. We are seeking a persistent, empathetic, and highly organized Attendance Officer to join our primary school. You will be the driving force behind our attendance strategy, working at the heart of the community to dismantle the barriers that prevent children from reaching the classroom.
The Role & Department
You will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Pastoral Manager to monitor, analyse, and improve whole-school attendance data.
The role is a unique blend of administrative precision and community outreach; you will spend time both analysing trends behind a desk and visiting families in the local area.
You will be the school’s primary liaison with the Birmingham City Council Education Welfare Service and other external agencies.
The department focuses on "support first," using data to identify vulnerable families early and providing the intervention needed to prevent persistent absence.
Core Responsibilities
Daily Monitoring: Managing the morning registers, identifying unexplained absences, and conducting "First Day Calling" to ensure every child is accounted for and safe.
Data Analysis: Using school management systems (e.g., SIMS, Arbor, or Bromcom) to produce weekly and termly attendance reports, identifying patterns of absence or lateness across specific year groups or cohorts.
Family Engagement: Meeting with parents and carers to discuss attendance concerns, creating "Attendance Action Plans," and conducting home visits to offer support and build stronger school-home links.
Incentive Programs: Designing and leading school-wide attendance initiatives, such as "100% Attendance" assemblies, class competitions, and reward schemes to celebrate improved engagement.
Legal Compliance: Managing the administration of Fixed Penalty Notices and representing the school in legal proceedings or attendance panels when formal intervention becomes necessary.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a "people person" with a firm but fair approach and a keen eye for detail. Requirements include:
Experience: Previous experience in an attendance, administrative, or family liaison role within an educational or social care setting.
Communication: The ability to have difficult conversations with sensitivity and professionalism, often with families facing complex challenges.
Tech Proficiency: Strong ICT skills, particularly in Excel and school-specific databases, with the ability to turn raw data into clear, actionable reports.
Local Knowledge: An understanding of the Birmingham educational landscape and the diverse socio-economic factors that can impact school attendance.
Why Join Us?
A role that is central to the school’s success—high attendance is the bedrock of our pupils’ academic and social achievement.
Access to professional development in safeguarding, legal frameworks for attendance, and data management.
A supportive and collaborative staff environment where the well-being of the community is a shared priority.
The opportunity to work in a dynamic Birmingham school that is deeply committed to inclusivity and social mobility.
