The Opportunity Portsmouth is a historic naval city with a proud maritime tradition and a contemporary, international outlook. We are seeking an enthusiastic Spanish Teacher to join our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with the potential to contribute to Key Stage 5 for a candidate with the right expertise. You will be responsible for inspiring students to see Spanish as a vital global language, opening doors to the cultures of Spain, Central and South America.
The Department
You will join a high-energy MFL faculty that prioritizes communicative confidence and cultural immersion.
The department is well-resourced with language labs and a variety of digital tools (such as interactive listening platforms and digital sentence builders) to support modern language acquisition.
We foster a "Target Language" environment, encouraging students to use Spanish for routine classroom interaction to build spontaneous speaking skills.
The school maintains active links for international projects and coastal cultural exchanges, taking advantage of our unique ferry links to mainland Europe.
Core Responsibilities
Planning and delivering engaging, high-impact lessons that build grammatical accuracy, phonics mastery, and a wide-ranging vocabulary.
Facilitating a supportive classroom environment where students feel confident taking risks and practicing their verbal skills.
Preparing Year 11 students for GCSE Spanish (AQA or Edexcel), with a focus on mastering the four key assessment pillars: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
Integrating authentic cultural materials—such as Hispanic film, music, and current affairs—to provide real-world context to language learning.
Tracking student progress through regular formative assessment and providing personalized feedback to ensure rapid progress across all year groups.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a linguist who can bring the "chispa" (spark) of the Spanish-speaking world into the classroom. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Spanish or a related Modern Foreign Languages field.
Near-native fluency in Spanish and a high level of English literacy.
A proven ability to motivate students of all backgrounds, demonstrating the professional and personal value of being multilingual.
A strong understanding of the current GCSE specifications and the ability to deliver effective exam-prep strategies.
