French Teacher | Sheffield
The Opportunity
Are you an enthusiastic linguist with the ability to bring the "Joie de Vivre" of the French-speaking world to the heart of South Yorkshire? Can you inspire students to look beyond the boundaries of the UK and develop the fluency needed to thrive in a global economy?
We are seeking a dynamic and creative French Teacher to join a high-achieving Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department in Sheffield. Known as the "Outdoor City" for its proximity to the Peak District and famous for its history of innovation and steel, Sheffield is a city that values both hard work and international ambition. We are looking for an educator who can make language learning a vibrant, essential part of the school’s academic culture.
Core Responsibilities
Curriculum Delivery: Planning and facilitating high-quality French lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with the opportunity to teach A-Level French for qualified candidates.
Target Language Immersion: Using a variety of communicative methods—including song, digital media, and interactive dialogue—to maximize students' exposure to the Target Language (TL).
GCSE & A-Level Success: Guiding students through the rigours of the AQA or Edexcel specifications, with a focus on building spontaneous speaking skills and high-level translation accuracy.
Cultural Enrichment: Integrating the study of Francophone culture from across the globe (France, Canada, West Africa, and the Caribbean) through film, literature, and current affairs.
Linguistic Foundations: Strengthening students’ understanding of grammar and syntax—from the perfect tense to the subjunctive—in a way that is logical, accessible, and fun.
Pastoral Care: Serving as a dedicated Form Tutor, providing a supportive environment and acting as a consistent point of professional contact for a specific group of students.
Why This School?
Sheffield’s International Outlook: Work in a city with two world-class universities and a diverse population, providing a rewarding context for teaching the importance of global communication.
A Hub for Languages: Join a department that prioritizes collaboration, shared resources, and the use of authentic materials to move beyond the textbook.
International Links: Benefit from a school that encourages global citizenship, with potential opportunities for coordinating language exchanges, trips to France, or virtual partner-school projects.
Professional Growth: Access to specialist CPD in EPI (Extensive Processing Instruction), Phonics in MFL, and pathways toward Head of MFL or International Coordinator roles.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications: Must hold QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a degree in French or a related discipline. Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are warmly encouraged to apply.
Linguistic Fluency: Exceptional proficiency in French, with the ability to model authentic pronunciation and nuanced grammar to students of all abilities.
Engaging Presence: An inspiring communicator who can overcome the "language barrier" with energy, empathy, and a variety of creative teaching strategies.
Character: A resilient, reflective, and collaborative professional who believes that learning a second language is a vital life skill and a window into a broader world.
