English Teacher | Brighton
The Opportunity
Are you a bibliophile with the ability to ignite a passion for the written word? Can you guide students through the complexities of a Shakespearean tragedy, the precision of a modern polemic, and the creative boundaries of their own prose?
We are seeking an inspiring and intellectually rigorous English Teacher to join a high-performing faculty in Brighton. Known for its eclectic literary history—from Graham Greene to the thriving contemporary poetry and "Slam" scene—Brighton provides a vibrant, liberal, and creative backdrop for an English specialist. We are looking for an educator who can foster critical thinkers, confident orators, and empathetic readers.
Core Responsibilities
Pedagogical Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, text-heavy lessons across KS3, KS4, and KS5, including GCSE English Language & Literature and A-Level English Literature/Language.
Textual Analysis: Developing students’ ability to deconstruct complex layers of meaning, exploring form, structure, and language across a diverse canon of classic and contemporary texts.
Creative Writing Leadership: Cultivating a classroom environment where students feel empowered to find their own voice, experimenting with genre, narrative arc, and rhetorical devices.
Curriculum Innovation: Integrating Brighton’s local literary heritage and diverse cultural identity into the schemes of work, ensuring the curriculum remains relevant and representative.
Exam Mastery: Guiding examination cohorts through AQA or Edexcel specifications, with a clinical focus on essay structure, comparative skills, and the effective use of critical terminology.
Literacy & Oracy Advocacy: Leading whole-school initiatives on reading for pleasure, debating societies, and "Speak Out" challenges to boost student confidence and vocabulary.
Why This School?
Brighton’s Literary Pulse: Work in a city that celebrates the arts, providing immediate access to the Brighton Festival, local independent bookshops, and a wealth of visiting authors and poets.
Collaborative Humanities Faculty: Join a team that values "co-planning" and intellectual exchange, working closely with Drama and History colleagues to provide a rich cultural education.
Innovative Learning Spaces: Benefit from a well-resourced library, dedicated "Writer’s Workshop" areas, and digital tools designed to enhance collaborative editing and peer feedback.
Professional Growth: Access to specialist CPD through the English Media Centre (EMC), external examiner training, and clear pathways toward Head of English or Literacy Coordinator roles.
Candidate Profile
Qualification: QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a strong honours degree in English Literature, Language, or a related Humanities discipline.
Subject Knowledge: A deep love for literature and a rigorous understanding of linguistic frameworks, with the ability to teach a broad range of texts with enthusiasm.
Pedagogy: A proven track record of facilitating strong student progress and a commitment to "responsive teaching" that addresses individual learning gaps.
Character: A resilient, articulate, and empathetic educator who can inspire a love of reading in even the most reluctant learners.
