Design & Technology Teacher | Dudley
The Opportunity
Are you a maker, an innovator, and a problem-solver? Can you inspire students to take a raw concept from a sketchpad to a fully realised, functional product?
We are seeking a versatile and forward-thinking Design & Technology (D&T) Teacher to join a well-resourced department in Dudley. Located in the historic heart of the Black Country—a region built on engineering and manufacturing excellence—this school is looking for a specialist who can honour that industrial heritage while embracing 21st-century technologies like CAD/CAM and smart materials.
Core Responsibilities
Pedagogical Excellence: Planning and delivering high-impact, practical lessons across KS3, KS4, and KS5, with a focus on Product Design, Resistant Materials, or Engineering.
Technical Instruction: Providing expert tuition in the safe use of workshop machinery (lathes, pillar drills, saws) and advanced manufacturing tools (3D printers, laser cutters).
Design Thinking: Guiding students through the iterative design process—from initial research and anthropometrics to prototyping and final evaluation.
Curriculum Innovation: Developing projects that solve real-world problems, integrating electronics (systems and control) and sustainable material choices into the schemes of work.
Exam Mastery: Mentoring GCSE and A-Level cohorts through the AQA or OCR specifications, with a strong emphasis on high-quality Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) folders and technical theory.
Health & Safety Leadership: Maintaining a rigorous culture of workshop safety, ensuring all risk assessments are current and student practice meets DATA (Design & Technology Association) standards.
Why This School?
Dudley’s Engineering Legacy: Work in a town with a proud manufacturing identity, providing unique opportunities for links with local apprenticeship providers and heritage sites like the Black Country Living Museum.
State-of-the-Art Workshops: Benefit from purpose-built D&T suites, including a dedicated CAD/CAM hub, traditional woodwork and metalwork areas, and a modern electronics lab.
Collaborative STEM Faculty: Join a team that bridges the gap between Art, Science, and Maths, fostering a holistic "Maker Culture" across the school.
Professional Growth: Access to specialist CPD in SolidWorks/2D Design, Health & Safety Accreditation (DATA), and pathways to Head of D&T or Vocational Lead roles.
Candidate Profile
Qualification: QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a strong honours degree in Design & Technology, Engineering, or a related industrial design discipline.
Subject Knowledge: A broad technical skillset, including proficiency in CAD software and a deep understanding of the properties of woods, metals, and polymers.
Pedagogy: A proven track record of securing high-quality NEA outcomes and a commitment to inclusive, hands-on learning.
Character: A practical, organised, and creative educator who can manage a busy workshop environment while inspiring students to innovate.
