Role Purpose
The Religious Studies Teacher provides engaging and academically rigorous lessons within a high-performing independent school environment. The role ensures that all teaching and learning is delivered in line with curriculum expectations and school values, promoting critical thinking, discussion, and reflection.
The post holder will be responsible for planning and delivering lessons, assessing student progress, and contributing to the wider academic and pastoral life of the school. They will uphold high standards of teaching, learning, and professional conduct, while fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.
The role contributes positively to the ethos, aims, and wider life of the school.
Religious Studies Teacher – Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Deliver engaging and well-structured Religious Studies lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4 (with potential for Key Stage 5)
Plan lessons that develop critical thinking, philosophical reasoning, and ethical awareness
Differentiate teaching to support, challenge, and stretch students of all abilities
Foster a respectful environment where diverse beliefs and perspectives are explored thoughtfully
Assessment and Progress
Assess, monitor, and track student progress in line with school policies
Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback to support student development
Prepare students effectively for internal and external examinations
Contribute to reporting and academic reviews as required
Curriculum Development
Contribute to the development and enhancement of the Religious Studies curriculum
Develop high-quality teaching resources and schemes of work
Engage with current developments in Religious Studies, philosophy, and ethics education
Pastoral and Wider School Contribution
Act as a form tutor where required, supporting students’ personal development and wellbeing
Contribute to the wider life of the school, including enrichment activities, clubs, or trips
Participate in school events such as open days, parent evenings, and academic showcases
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain high standards of professionalism and classroom management
Engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice
Work collaboratively with colleagues to support departmental and whole-school priorities
Additional Responsibilities
Attend staff training (INSET) and relevant meetings
Support school initiatives and contribute to a positive school culture
Undertake additional duties as directed by senior leadership

Person Specification
Experience
Experience teaching Religious Studies or a related subject (desirable)
Experience working in an educational setting
Experience supporting student progress and achievement
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong subject knowledge in Religious Studies, Theology, or Philosophy
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to inspire and engage students of varying abilities
Strong organisational and time management skills
Commitment to high standards of teaching and learning
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Competent IT skills, including use of educational technologies
