Head of Geography – Independent School – Birmingham
A well-regarded independent school in Birmingham is seeking an experienced and inspiring Head of Geography to lead a successful department with strong uptake and excellent academic standards. This is a standout opportunity for a passionate geographer and confident leader to shape curriculum, drive high-quality teaching and promote a rich subject culture across the school.
The school offers an exceptional learning environment, combining high expectations with strong pastoral care. Pupils are engaged and motivated, and staff benefit from excellent resources, smaller class sizes and a culture that values professional expertise and thoughtful leadership.
The Role
As Head of Geography, you will provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for the department, ensuring that Geography continues to thrive and develop. Your responsibilities will include:
Leading curriculum design and sequencing across KS3, KS4 and potentially KS5
Supporting and coaching colleagues through shared planning, modelling and professional dialogue
Driving consistently high standards in classroom practice, assessment and outcomes
Developing fieldwork and enquiry-based learning opportunities
Promoting Geography through enrichment, trips and wider school initiatives
You will teach across the school, with a strong focus on helping pupils develop deep geographical understanding and the key skills needed for success: map and data interpretation, investigative enquiry, extended writing and evaluation.
The curriculum is designed to balance physical and human geography while encouraging pupils to explore contemporary issues such as climate change, development, globalisation, urban growth and resource management through relevant case studies.
The Department
Geography is a popular and high-performing subject within the school. The department is collaborative and academically ambitious, with teachers working closely to deliver a rich and engaging curriculum.
The team values:
Strong subject scholarship and up-to-date geographical knowledge
High-quality explanation, questioning and discussion
Rigorous academic writing and structured evaluation
Enquiry and investigation, including fieldwork-style learning
Pupils enjoy the way Geography connects to real-world challenges, and many continue the subject to GCSE and A-Level. The department aims to stretch and support learners through challenging content, thoughtful feedback and opportunities for independent learning.
The School
The school has an excellent reputation for academic achievement and pastoral provision. Pupils benefit from a calm, respectful learning culture, strong relationships with staff and access to a wide co-curricular programme.
Staff are supported through high-quality CPD, collaborative working and leadership that values both professional autonomy and high standards. Facilities are strong and learning is well-resourced, including access to technology and opportunities to enrich the curriculum through trips and guest speakers.

Hold QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification
Have strong subject knowledge in Geography across relevant key stages
Demonstrate successful leadership experience (or be ready to step up)
Be an excellent classroom practitioner with consistently high expectations
Use assessment effectively to drive progress and stretch high-attaining pupils
