Teacher of Spanish – Secondary School – York
A well-regarded 11–18 secondary school in York is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Teacher of Spanish to join its established Modern Foreign Languages department. The school serves a mixed and academically ambitious intake from across the city and surrounding villages and has built a strong local reputation for consistent GCSE outcomes, calm behaviour and a structured, supportive leadership culture.
Spanish is a popular option at GCSE, with healthy uptake and strong outcomes year on year. The department has worked hard to build a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum that develops grammatical confidence, cultural understanding and authentic communication from Year 7 onwards.
The Role
You will teach Spanish across Key Stages 3 and 4, with the opportunity to contribute to A-Level teaching depending on experience. Lessons are well-sequenced and built around clear routines, retrieval practice and high participation. The department values clarity, modelling and structured speaking practice to ensure pupils develop real fluency and confidence.
You will:
• Plan and deliver engaging Spanish lessons aligned to a shared department scheme
• Prepare pupils effectively for GCSE examinations
• Contribute to curriculum refinement and resource development
• Support enrichment such as language clubs or cultural events
• Maintain high expectations of behaviour and presentation
This role would suit a teacher who values strong routines, consistency and collaborative planning.
The MFL Department
The Languages team is stable, supportive and forward-thinking. French and Spanish are both offered, and there is a shared approach to curriculum design and assessment. Teachers meet regularly to review outcomes, moderate work and refine teaching strategies.
Facilities include:
• Dedicated MFL classrooms clustered within one corridor
• Interactive panels in each room
• Shared centralised resources and assessment banks
• Established links with local sixth form providers
The department promotes cultural enrichment through themed language weeks, international celebrations and local partnerships.
The School
This York secondary is known for its orderly environment and respectful pupils. Behaviour systems are clear and consistently applied, allowing teachers to focus on teaching rather than classroom management.
The school building has benefited from phased refurbishment, with modernised teaching spaces, a central library and improved communal areas. Leadership is visible and pragmatic, with a strong emphasis on reducing unnecessary workload and ensuring teachers have time to focus on planning and feedback.
Staff retention is strong, and professional development is structured and meaningful.
Who We’re Looking For
The successful candidate will:
• Hold QTS (or equivalent) in Spanish
• Have experience teaching Spanish at KS3 and KS4
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm
• Deliver well-structured, engaging lessons
• Contribute positively to a collaborative department
Applications from both experienced teachers and strong early career teachers are welcomed.
What’s On Offer
• Competitive salary aligned to experience
• Supportive and established MFL team
• Clear behaviour systems and calm learning environment
• Access to high-quality CPD
• A respected York secondary with strong community ties
This is an excellent opportunity for a Spanish specialist looking to join a structured, high-performing school where languages are valued and supported.
