Attendance & Welfare Officer – Secondary Academy – Sheffield, South Yorkshire
A well-established and community-focused 11–16 secondary academy in Sheffield is seeking a proactive and resilient Attendance & Welfare Officer to join its pastoral support team. This is a key operational role within a school that has made significant progress in recent years and places strong emphasis on safeguarding, inclusion and student wellbeing.
The academy serves a diverse urban community and has built a reputation for clear behaviour systems, consistent expectations and strong pastoral structures. Attendance improvement is a central priority — and this role is critical in sustaining that progress.
The Role
Working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Heads of Year and the Senior Leadership Team, you will take the lead on attendance monitoring, early intervention and family engagement. You will track attendance daily, identify patterns, and implement supportive strategies to reduce persistent absence.
This is a role that combines data analysis with direct family communication and, where appropriate, partnership with external agencies.
Key responsibilities include:
• Monitoring daily attendance and producing accurate reports for senior leaders
• Identifying trends and targeting persistent absence
• Contacting parents/carers regarding absence concerns
• Coordinating attendance meetings and documenting action plans
• Conducting home visits where appropriate and in line with policy
• Liaising with external agencies and the local authority when required
• Supporting safeguarding processes and maintaining accurate records
• Contributing to whole-school attendance strategies and initiatives
The School Context
The academy operates from a modernised site with clear operational systems and an experienced pastoral structure. The attendance office works closely with Heads of Year and the behaviour team, ensuring a joined-up approach to student support.
Leadership is visible and supportive, and staff wellbeing is taken seriously. Processes are structured, expectations are clear, and communication across departments is strong.
Who We’re Looking For
• Previous experience in a school attendance or welfare role
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding and attendance legislation
• Confidence working with families in challenging circumstances
• Competence in using school MIS systems to track data
• Resilience, discretion and excellent communication skills
• Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
Why Join This School?
• A forward-moving secondary academy with improving outcomes
• Strong safeguarding culture and clear procedures
• Supportive pastoral leadership team
• Opportunity to make measurable impact on student progress
• Competitive salary within local authority pay scales
This is a role suited to someone who understands that attendance is fundamental to achievement — and who is committed to working collaboratively with families to improve outcomes.
If you are an experienced Attendance & Welfare professional ready to join a structured and ambitious school environment, we would welcome your CV.
