Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only
Start Date: Immediate or by agreement
Role Overview
An exciting opportunity has become available for a proactive, compassionate, and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join a high-achieving yet inclusive secondary school in Caversham, Reading. This role is suited to individuals who are passionate about student wellbeing, behaviour support, and inclusive education, and who want to play a key role in helping young people overcome personal and behavioural barriers to success.
As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work closely with students who require additional support to manage their behaviour, emotions, and engagement with learning. Many of the pupils supported in this role are academically capable but struggle due to anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional regulation difficulties, or social challenges. Your work will help bridge the gap between potential and performance.
This is a highly relational role that requires emotional intelligence, consistency, and the ability to build trust with students who may feel misunderstood or disconnected from education.
Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role
The primary purpose of the Behaviour Mentor is to promote positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and inclusion across the school. You will act as a key adult for identified students, supporting them to remain engaged in education and to develop the social and emotional skills needed for long-term success.
Rather than responding to behaviour through punishment alone, the school takes a preventative and restorative approach, and Behaviour Mentors play a central role in this philosophy. You will help students understand the impact of their behaviour, develop accountability, and learn healthier ways of expressing emotions.
Key Responsibilities
As a Behaviour Mentor in Caversham, your responsibilities will include:
Providing targeted 1:1 mentoring for students with behavioural or emotional needs
Delivering small group sessions focused on resilience, emotional literacy, confidence, and social interaction
Supporting students in lessons to improve focus, engagement, and behaviour
Assisting pupils during unstructured times such as breaks, lunch, and movement between lessons
Supporting students during emotionally challenging moments and helping them self-regulate
De-escalating situations calmly using restorative and trauma-informed approaches
Supporting pupils returning to school following exclusion, illness, or emotional distress
Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff, and senior leaders
Contributing to behaviour plans, wellbeing strategies, and intervention reviews
Maintaining accurate records of behaviour incidents, progress, and outcomes
Acting as a positive role model at all times
The School Environment
Located in the Caversham area of Reading, this school benefits from a strong community ethos and a supportive leadership team. The school places a high value on student voice, emotional wellbeing, and respectful relationships between staff and pupils.
Staff are encouraged to work collaboratively, and Behaviour Mentors are recognised as essential members of the pastoral and inclusion teams. The school invests heavily in training and provides regular opportunities for professional reflection and development.
The setting is well-resourced and promotes a calm, structured learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and challenged.

Many of these pupils are highly capable but need additional emotional and behavioural guidance to thrive within a mainstream school environment.
