With a growing number of pupils in Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 requiring additional behavioural and emotional support, the school is now seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join their pastoral and SEND team.
Role Purpose
The Behaviour Mentor will support children who experience challenges with behaviour, emotional regulation, social interaction, or engagement with learning. Pupils in this role may present with SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, attachment difficulties, or delayed social and emotional development.
This role requires an empathetic, patient, and resilient practitioner who can provide structured support in both classroom and unstructured environments. You will work directly with children, teachers, and parents to implement behaviour strategies, provide targeted interventions, and build emotional resilience and confidence in young learners.
Key Responsibilities
Provide targeted 1:1 behavioural and emotional support for pupils
Deliver structured small group interventions focused on social skills, emotional literacy, and self-regulation
Support children within Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classrooms
Assist pupils during transitions, routines, and daily activities
Support behaviour management during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods
Implement individual behaviour support plans consistently, monitoring progress and reviewing outcomes
Employ play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed approaches
Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies for pupils
Work collaboratively with class teachers, EYFS practitioners, SENCO, and pastoral staff
Observe, assess, and record pupil progress, behaviour trends, and interventions
Prepare written reports and contribute to planning and review meetings
Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and carers
Support safeguarding, child protection, and wellbeing procedures consistently
Actively contribute to creating a school culture that promotes inclusion, respect, and empathy
The Ideal Candidate
The school is looking for a Behaviour Mentor who is compassionate, calm, and highly skilled at supporting young children with complex emotional and behavioural needs. You will have a strong understanding that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication and respond with patience, consistency, and positivity.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
Experience working in a Primary, Nursery, or EYFS setting
Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and attachment-informed approaches
The ability to implement behaviour interventions and monitor outcomes effectively
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with staff, parents, and external agencies
Emotional resilience, adaptability, and reflective practice
A proactive approach to supporting children’s emotional and behavioural development
Qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, or mental health are highly desirable but not essential.
