We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, motivated, and professional Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Teaching Assistant to join our committed Early Years team at a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Islington, North London. This role represents an excellent opportunity for an individual who is passionate about early childhood education and who understands the importance of providing children with a strong, supportive foundation at the very start of their educational journey.
Our school serves a diverse and vibrant community and is proud of its inclusive ethos, high standards, and child-centred approach to learning. We place great emphasis on nurturing the whole child and ensuring that every pupil feels safe, valued, and supported. The Early Years provision plays a central role in achieving this aim, and we are therefore looking for an EYFS Teaching Assistant who is committed to delivering high-quality support and care within this crucial stage of development.
The Role
As an EYFS Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the class teacher and the wider Early Years team to support children in Nursery and/or Reception. You will assist in delivering a broad, balanced, and engaging curriculum in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, supporting children’s learning through structured activities and purposeful play.
You will contribute to creating a warm, stimulating, and well-organised learning environment where children feel confident to explore, communicate, and develop independence. The role requires a caring and observant practitioner who understands how young children learn and develop, and who can respond sensitively to individual needs, abilities, and interests.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with young children, understands the importance of early intervention, and is committed to supporting children’s academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake a range of responsibilities to support the effective running of the Early Years provision, including:
Supporting the class teacher in the planning and delivery of learning activities in line with the EYFS framework
Working with individual children and small groups to support early learning and development
Supporting children’s communication and language development, including vocabulary building and early phonics
Encouraging the development of personal, social, and emotional skills, including sharing, turn-taking, and self-regulation
Assisting with the observation, assessment, and recording of children’s progress
Supporting learning through play, both indoors and outdoors
Helping to maintain a safe, clean, and stimulating learning environment
Supporting children during daily routines, including arrival, transitions, mealtimes, and toileting where required
Encouraging positive behaviour and modelling appropriate social interactions
Working collaboratively with teachers, Early Years practitioners, and other support staff
Supporting children with additional needs under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCo where appropriate
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking an EYFS Teaching Assistant who demonstrates a genuine enthusiasm for early childhood education and who understands the importance of building strong, positive relationships with young children. You should be patient, nurturing, and reliable, with the ability to remain calm and positive in a busy classroom environment.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
Experience working with children in an EYFS setting, such as a primary school, nursery, or early years provision
A sound understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
A caring, patient, and supportive approach
The ability to work effectively as part of a team
A proactive and flexible attitude to supporting classroom practice
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
A relevant qualification in childcare or early years education (Level 2 or Level 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with relevant experience and a strong commitment to learning and development.
Our School Environment
Our school offers a supportive and professional working environment where staff are encouraged to collaborate and share best practice. The Early Years team is well-established and benefits from strong leadership, clear expectations, and access to appropriate resources.
We recognise the importance of professional development and provide opportunities for staff to develop their skills and knowledge through training and ongoing support.
